Gabriel Muresan is gone. The former Romania international drowned in a lake near Apold, the small Transylvanian town where he had served as mayor since 2020. He was 44 years old.
The Romanian Football Federation confirmed his death and extended condolences to his family. The local public authority in Apold described him as "a devoted servant of our community" — a phrase that captures a second act that had nothing to do with football, and yet defined the last years of his life.
Three titles and Champions League nights
Muresan's best years came at Cluj, where he spent six seasons and won the Romanian league in 2008, 2010, and 2012. Three domestic cups, too. For a midfielder operating outside one of Europe's glamour leagues, that's a serious medal haul.
He also got his European moments. Muresan featured in three Champions League group-stage campaigns with Cluj — games against Chelsea, Manchester United, and Roma. Not many Romanian club players from that generation can say the same.
Internationally, he earned nine caps for the national team between 2007 and 2011, featuring in World Cup and European Championship qualifying campaigns. Nine caps isn't a headline number, but it represents real international pedigree at a time when Romania was still trying to find its footing after the golden Hagi generation had moved on.
A life beyond the pitch
After retiring, Muresan didn't drift away quietly. He moved into local politics in Apold and won the mayoral election in 2020 — a genuine pivot, not a ceremonial role. Whatever you think of footballers-turned-politicians, the community clearly backed him.
He was 44. The Romanian Football Federation has confirmed his passing. There's nothing more to add to that.
