Haaland and Mbappé Are Rewriting the International Scoring Record Books — But In Very Different Ways.

Kylian Mbappé is the World Cup's all-time leading scorer. Erling Haaland scores a goal every time he almost plays. These two are doing something genuinely rare in international football — and they're doing it at the same time.

As of late September 2026, Haaland has 64 goals in 56 appearances for Norway. Mbappé has 67 in 107 for France. The gap in goal tallies is slim. The gap in appearances tells a completely different story.

Haaland's rate is almost unreasonable

1.14 goals per international appearance. That's not a hot streak — that's a career average. Haaland reached 50 Norway goals in just 46 games, a milestone it took Mbappé 90 appearances to hit. He scored 16 goals in Norway's World Cup qualifying campaign alone, matching the European record for a single cycle. Then added 7 more at the tournament itself, including braces against Iraq, Senegal, and Brazil before Norway fell to England in the quarterfinals.

He's also Norway's all-time leading scorer — a record he claimed in October 2024 by passing Jørgen Juve's mark of 33. At 25. The numbers aren't flattering him. They're just accurate.

At club level, Haaland scored 32 goals across a 20-match stretch early in the 2025-26 season combining City and country appearances. His City contract runs to 2034. He's not going anywhere, and neither are his scoring numbers.

Mbappé's World Cup legacy is already settled

22 World Cup goals across three tournaments — 4 in 2018, 8 in 2022, 10 in 2026. He passed Miroslav Klose's previous record of 16 and surpassed Messi's 2026 total of 21 in the same summer. The Golden Boot at consecutive World Cups. That's not something you can argue with.

He passed Olivier Giroud's French record of 57 goals during the 2026 tournament and pushed his tally to 67 with a 54th-minute winner against Türkiye in the Nations League on September 25. At 27, he's averaging 0.63 goals per international appearance — respectable by any normal standard, though Haaland's rate makes everyone look conservative by comparison.

At Real Madrid, Mbappé posted 42 goals in 44 matches in 2025-26, including 12 penalties. Forbes estimated his earnings at $95 million in the year leading up to the World Cup. Haaland pulled in $80 million over the same period. Between the two of them, they're generating nearly $200 million annually and producing at rates that justify most of it.

  • Haaland: 64 goals, 56 Norway appearances, 1.14 per game
  • Mbappé: 67 goals, 107 France appearances, 0.63 per game
  • Mbappé: 22 World Cup goals, outright all-time record
  • Haaland: 16 qualifying goals, European record for a single campaign

Cristiano Ronaldo's international record of 146 goals is the horizon both are chasing, and neither is close — Haaland needs 82 more, Mbappé 79. At their current averages, Haaland gets there in roughly 72 more appearances, Mbappé in around 125. That's a lot of football, and a lot can change. But right now, both are doing enough to make the conversation worth having.

Mbappé holds more goals and an immortal World Cup legacy. Haaland scores more often than almost anyone who has ever played the game. Whoever you're watching more closely on the next international break, there's a very good reason to be watching.
