"Rest in peace, King Harald. Thank you for everything you have meant to Norway. It was an honor to meet you." Erling Haaland posted those words on social media following the death of Norway's King Harald V at age 89 — weeks after meeting him in person at the Royal Palace in Oslo.
The timing makes it hit harder. Haaland and Norway captain Martin Ødegaard had only just been received by the King in mid-July, following Norway's run to the World Cup final. Harald, already struggling with serious mobility issues, greeted the players from a stool. There was no sign, apparently, of how little time remained.
A Royal Family That Actually Showed Up
What stood out from Norway's World Cup campaign wasn't just what happened on the pitch. The royal family lived it with the country. Crown Prince Haakon joined the post-tournament celebrations, beating a drum and taking part in the Viking rowing ceremony alongside supporters. Princess Ingrid Alexandra and Prince Sverre Magnus went into the locker room after Norway's round-of-16 win over Brazil — and the image of them embracing a shirtless Haaland went viral almost immediately. The royal family captioned the video themselves: "Miracle in New Jersey!"
That's not a dynasty performing duty from a balcony. That's a family that was genuinely invested.
After Norway's defeat to England, it was Crown Prince Haakon who went to the dressing room — not to commiserate, but to personally invite the squad to the palace reception.
Football Pauses to Mourn
Norway's football federation has postponed matches as a mark of respect. The flag above the Royal Palace flies at half-staff.
Ødegaard's tribute was quieter than Haaland's but just as sincere: "A wonderful king and a wonderful man whom we all felt a close connection to. Rest in peace, dear King Harald."
That sense of closeness was clearly real. The reception at the palace wasn't a photo opportunity — it was a king, despite everything his health had taken from him, making the effort to personally welcome home a team that had given the country something to believe in.
