Jayden Adams played his last professional match just days ago. The 25-year-old South Africa midfielder, who represented Bafana Bafana at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America, has died. No cause of death has been confirmed.
The news broke via South African outlet Soccer Laduma on Saturday. The South African Football Association has yet to release an official statement, but the South African Football Players Union confirmed the passing and left little doubt about its weight.
"Jayden had only recently represented South Africa at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, carrying the hopes of the nation with pride, courage, and distinction," the SAFPU said. "South African football has lost a gifted player, a proud servant of the game and a young life that still had so much to offer."
What Adams meant to Bafana Bafana
Adams wasn't a peripheral figure at this tournament. He started all three of South Africa's group-stage games — against Mexico, the Czech Republic, and South Korea — and was part of the squad that reached the knockout rounds. Nine senior caps in total. He didn't feature in the round-of-32 loss to Canada, but his contribution to getting the team there was real.
At club level, he came through Stellenbosch before earning a move to Mamelodi Sundowns last year — one of the continent's most ambitious clubs, with CAF Champions League ambitions that Adams himself had spoken about.
His mentor, Brendine Johnson, spoke about a conversation with Adams just two days before the news broke. "I had a close conversation with him on Thursday, the guy was really positive on returning back... being a CAF champion, knowing what lies ahead, he was prepared," Johnson said. "Nobody expected this."
Grief compounded by recent loss
The tragedy is even harder to place in context knowing what this family had already been through. Adams' grandmother, Marianna, died while he was playing at the World Cup last month. SAFA president Danny Jordaan had released a statement of condolence at the time.
Johnson's words say everything: "This passing has ripped everybody apart, returning from the World Cup just now, and then got such news."
He asked that the family's privacy be respected. That feels like the only appropriate note to end on.
