Sorba Thomas flipped his car onto its roof on a residential street near Hull City's training ground Friday morning and walked away without a scratch. That's the good news. The better news for Hull is that he'll be available for Saturday's trip to Stamford Bridge.
Images circulating on social media showed Thomas's Land Rover Defender — the £160,000 model of choice for footballers with taste and horsepower — sitting inverted on Millhouse Woods Lane in Cottingham, just a short distance from the club's training complex. Humberside Police confirmed officers attended the scene around 9am, closing the road while emergency services dealt with the aftermath. Two parked cars, a blue Mini and a black 4x4, were also damaged in the collision.
Hull City confirmed Thomas emerged "completely unscathed." The vehicle has since been towed, conveniently clearing the road just in time for the team bus to pass through on its way to London.
Thomas can't afford time on the sidelines
The timing matters more than it might look. Thomas only joined from Stoke on transfer deadline day for £10.5 million, and his first two appearances for Hull have been modest — a 0-0 draw with Aston Villa and a 1-0 Carabao Cup defeat to Sunderland. His manager, Sergej Jakirovic — who was reportedly present at the scene — has spoken openly about what Thomas brings: delivery, set-pieces, pace, and defensive responsibility. A winger who can be shifted into a left-sided number 10 role is exactly the kind of flexibility Hull need at this level.
Stoke fans will be watching this closely too. His last-minute exit sparked genuine unrest at the bet365 Stadium, enough that sporting director Jon Walters had to issue a public statement. Thomas won Stoke's Player of the Year last season with 10 goals and 13 assists. Hull paid £10.5 million for that output. He hasn't shown it yet.
Hull's start has been anything but ordinary
Context: Hull are third in the Premier League after beating Manchester United and Coventry City and drawing with Aston Villa. That's a newly promoted side punching well above what the pre-season markets had priced them at. Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday is the first real test of whether this is a genuine story or a small-sample fluke.
Local councillor Phil Redshaw, who visited the scene Friday morning, noted there have been "a few near misses" on Millhouse Woods Lane recently and that he'd already written to the club asking players to take more care. He'll presumably be following up that letter.
Thomas is fine. He'll be on the bus. Whether he starts against Chelsea is Jakirovic's call — but the manager's pre-match words were clear: "I don't have any doubt about Sorba."
