Juan Mata just won A-League Player of the Year at 38, and he's walking away anyway. Not from football entirely — that much he's made clear — but from Melbourne Victory, the club where he rediscovered something he thought he might have lost.
"Falling back in love with football" was how he put it. That's not spin. A former Champions League winner and World Cup champion, voting himself into domestic relevance in Australia in his late thirties, genuinely seemed to mean it.

Replacing that kind of influence isn't straightforward. Mata wasn't just a nostalgia act at Victory — he was voted the best player in the entire competition last season. That's a real void. Teams built around an aging creative hub tend to find their betting appeal shifts sharply once that hub is gone, and Victory's attacking odds heading into 2026-27 deserve a second look from anyone pricing them for a title run.
The good news for Victory is that Mata isn't disappearing. He took a minority ownership stake in June, will chair the club's newly established football committee, and brings the kind of football intelligence that genuinely shapes clubs from the inside — assuming they let it. Football director John Didulica sounded like he meant it when he said Mata's intelligence would lead that committee. Whether ownership roles translate into on-pitch improvement is a different question entirely.

He's mulling "the next steps in his career" — which at 38, after winning player of the year in the A-League, is either a retirement announcement waiting to happen or a move somewhere unexpected. Mata has stakes in Alpine F1 and San Diego FC, so his post-playing blueprint is clearly more structured than most. He came to Australia via Western Sydney Wanderers in 2025. Before that, Chelsea, Manchester United, Valencia — a career that stretched longer and further than almost anyone predicted.
"Now I am excited about our next chapters," he said. He didn't say playing chapters. That's probably telling.
