Manchester United Watched Mbappé as a Teenager and Decided He Wasn't Good Enough.

"They weren't too sure about him, so we just left it." That's how Manchester United passed on Kylian Mbappé.

Ryan Giggs has told the full story on Rio Ferdinand's podcast, and it's the kind of tale that makes you want to track down whoever filed that scouting report and ask them some very pointed questions. Back in 2015, Giggs was walking through a village in the south of France when a stranger — a United fan named Lionel — stopped him and urged him to watch a teenage Monaco forward named Kylian Mbappé. Giggs took the tip seriously. He went to watch him. He brought along Albert, another United assistant. They were stunned.

"You can see players and they can be special, but he did look exceptional," Giggs said. So they passed the recommendation up to the scouting team, who dispatched someone to Paris to watch Monaco face PSG. The verdict that came back? Not for us.

The most expensive pass in United's history

Mbappé joined PSG in 2018 for £162 million — the second-largest transfer fee ever paid. He's won the World Cup with France, scored a hat-trick in a World Cup final, claimed the Golden Boot at this summer's tournament, and is now the competition's all-time leading scorer. Whatever United's scout saw that night in Paris, it clearly wasn't what the rest of the world ended up watching.

This sits comfortably among the most consequential misjudgements in the club's recent history — and the competition for that title is fierce. A team that has spent hundreds of millions on midfielders and forwards who didn't work out somehow let a generational talent slip through their fingers because a scouting trip to PSG didn't convince them.

The same source flagged Saliba and Cherki too

The story gets sharper. Giggs went back through his texts with Lionel and found that the same man, in 2018, flagged a young William Saliba at St. Etienne and tipped him toward Rayan Cherki. Saliba is now a France international anchoring Arsenal's defence. Cherki plays international football for France too.

Three names. Three players who became French internationals. All flagged by the same contact. United acted on the tip once, watched Mbappé, and still walked away empty-handed.

  • Kylian Mbappé: signed by PSG for £162m in 2018, World Cup winner, all-time World Cup top scorer
  • William Saliba: France international, key defender at Arsenal
  • Rayan Cherki: France international, now at Manchester City

"We just left it." For a club that's spent the last decade searching for exactly the kind of forward Mbappé became, those four words sting more than any transfer fee.
