"If I do survive the year, that would really be it." Martin O'Neill said those words to Sky Sports recently, and they land differently now that Celtic have confirmed their 74-year-old manager is currently in hospital following a medical procedure.

The club were pushed into a statement on Wednesday, posting on social media that O'Neill "has undergone a small procedure" and is expected to be discharged "in the next day or two." No further details on the nature of the procedure have been released, and Celtic have asked that O'Neill's privacy — and his family's — be respected.

A manager who never entirely convinced himself he'd be here

O'Neill was in the dugout just days ago as Celtic opened their Scottish Premiership title defence with a 1-0 win over Dundee on Monday. Whatever this procedure was, it followed immediately after that.

The context matters. O'Neill only signed a permanent one-year deal with Celtic in June — his third stint at the club after two interim spells last season — and he's already been candid about the fact this season is likely his last. He admitted he wasn't entirely sure about taking the role even when he accepted it. That kind of honesty is rare from a manager in post, and it tells you a lot about where his head is at.

He guided Celtic to a league and cup double last season, stepping in after Brendan Rodgers' surprise October exit, leaving, then returning again in January following Wilfried Nancy's eight-game spell. The fact he stayed on at all came down to a conversation with principal shareholder Dermot Desmond. Whether that relationship — and O'Neill's own health — holds steady enough to last the full campaign is now a legitimate question.

What this means for Celtic's season

Celtic's title defence has started cleanly enough, but a manager who's hospitalised before the season is even a week old introduces real uncertainty. If O'Neill misses significant time, or if his health deteriorates further, the club would be back in familiar territory — searching for stability in the dugout, again.

From a betting standpoint, Celtic's odds to retain the title are built on a settled, experienced manager who knows the squad. Any prolonged absence chips away at that assumption. Keep an eye on how long this stay actually lasts.

O'Neill's own words remain the sharpest summary of where things stand: "Time does catch up with you, and I genuinely mean this about surviving the year."
