"The pain is immense, and it will take time for this wound to heal." That's Lionel Messi on Monday, three days after Spain ended Argentina's reign as world champions in the 2026 World Cup final. At 39, he dragged his country back to consecutive finals. It still wasn't enough.
Messi's social media post was measured and gracious — the kind of message you write when you've processed enough to speak but not enough to move on. He acknowledged Spain's title, thanked Argentina's supporters for "once again" uniting the country, and held onto what he could: "This group reached two consecutive World Cup finals."
That context matters. Argentina didn't collapse. They pushed the game into extra time, and Messi — often forced to drop deep to help build attacks rather than lurk near the Spanish box — led a late chase for an equaliser after Ferran's decisive goal. It didn't come. But the exits against Cape Verde, Egypt, Switzerland and England earlier in the tournament had already shown this was a side still capable of grinding through the crises that define knockout football.
What happens to Argentina now
The real question — and the one nobody can answer yet — is whether Messi continues. He's still Argentina's most influential player at 39. That's both a compliment and a structural problem for Scaloni, because his squad's ceiling is almost entirely tied to one man's motivation levels.
Scaloni's own future looks equally uncertain. The coach and captain have been inseparable since the 2021 Copa América, and it's difficult to imagine one's chapter ending without the other's closing shortly after.
The 2028 Copa América, hosted in the United States, gives Messi one more plausible target — and Inter Miami's presence in that market makes the idea less far-fetched than it sounds. But right now, none of that will feel like consolation.
He ended his message by congratulating Spain. Short, clean, no bitterness. That's also the Messi way — but Argentina's betting markets and succession plans are both in a holding pattern until he decides what comes next.
