Milan's Monday Night Massacre: Allegri and Three Executives Out After Champions League Collapse

"Unequivocal failure." That's how AC Milan's ownership described a season that had them in the top two for most of its duration — and then ended with a 2-1 home defeat to a Cagliari side that had nothing to play for.

The club have confirmed the simultaneous dismissal of head coach Massimiliano Allegri, CEO Giorgio Furlani, sporting director Igli Tare, and technical director Geoffrey Moncada. All four gone in a single statement. RedBird patron Gerry Cardinale cleaned house and, pointedly, kept only one man: special advisor Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

One point. That's all they needed.

Milan went into the final round of Serie A with a two-point cushion over Como and a superior head-to-head record. Champions League qualification was theirs to lose. They lost it. Leading 1-0 at home, they conceded twice and finished outside the top four. That's not bad luck — that's a structural problem, and Cardinale clearly sees it that way.

The club's statement was unusually direct for a football club: "The final stretch was completely inconsistent with the performance up to that point, with last night's disappointing loss in the final game turning the season into an unequivocal failure."

No soft language. No "mutual consent." No "we thank him and wish him well in his future endeavours" padding. The word "failure" appeared in the official release.

What this overhaul actually means

Sacking a head coach is standard. Firing the CEO, sporting director, and technical director at the same time signals something deeper — a complete loss of confidence in the football operation's structure, not just its results. Whoever comes in next inherits a squad with genuine quality but also serious questions about mentality and consistency at the decisive moments of a season.

Milan without Champions League football will carry a lower price tag in squad negotiations this summer. Players who can choose between clubs will choose elsewhere. The rebuild starts at a disadvantage.

"Further announcements regarding the next appointments will be made in due course," the club said. For now, the only certainty at San Siro is that Zlatan still has a job.
