Ahead of Real Madrid's fixture against Real Betis, the Portuguese manager addressed Messi's retirement from international football with the kind of unguarded honesty that press conferences rarely produce. Mourinho — famously indifferent to the American league — admitted he'd tune in just to watch Messi's final years play out in Florida.
"To talk about Messi is complicated," Mourinho said. "There is not much more to say, and there are no words that can describe his quality as a player."
The highest compliment Mourinho could give
Coming from a manager who spent years setting his teams up specifically to neutralise Messi, that's a significant statement. This isn't hollow tribute. Mourinho has built careers on stopping great players — so when he runs out of words for one, it means something.
Messi's retirement from international duty closes a chapter that included a 2022 World Cup title with Argentina. The void he leaves at international level is straightforward: there's no one who does what he does, and at 37, there never will be another version of him coming through.
Alvarez's Atletico situation lingers
Mourinho also touched on Julian Alvarez, who ended up at Atletico Madrid after a summer move from Manchester City fell through in the way these things do — quietly, then all at once. The Argentine forward is now at the Metropolitano, but questions around his role and adaptation remain open.
Alvarez filling even a fraction of the creative burden Messi carried for Argentina is an ask that will define his next few seasons. At club level, whether Atletico's system gets the best out of him is a question Diego Simeone's odds-on defensively-minded setup doesn't make easy to answer.
Mourinho didn't offer predictions. He rarely does on other clubs' business. But the fact he brought it up at all suggests Alvarez's trajectory is one the wider football world is watching closely.
