Thomas Mueller, Mats Hummels, Yann Sommer, and Lucas Hernandez have collectively bought into Estrela da Amadora, the Portuguese club confirmed on Tuesday — part of an international consortium that paid €40 million for a 90% majority stake in the Primeira Liga side.

The group is led by ADvantage and LEAD, with backing from the KI Group. The four former Bayern Munich players are listed as "strategic investors connected to international football." Which, fine — but their names carry weight, and that's clearly the point.

A club that barely exists on paper yet

Estrela da Amadora were only refounded in 2020, nine years after their predecessor collapsed under financial pressure. They finished 15th in the Primeira Liga last season. Not exactly a glamour project. That's either a red flag or precisely the kind of ground-floor entry a smart investor wants — a club with a recognisable name in Lisbon's football landscape, minimal expectations, and room to grow without the pressure of Champions League ambitions hanging over every decision.

For the Primeira Liga's competitive picture, money like this matters. €40 million doesn't buy you Porto or Benfica, but it's enough to reshape what a mid-table club can realistically aim for. Estrela's squad-building budget this summer and next will be worth watching closely — their survival odds next season could look very different from how they did in May.

Four World Cup winners, four different chapters

The investor group itself is an interesting cross-section of where elite players end up post-peak. Hummels retired last year after a career that ended somewhat quietly. Mueller, 36, is now playing for Vancouver Whitecaps in MLS. Hernandez is at Paris Saint-Germain. Sommer is at Club Brugge.

  • Mueller and Hummels won the World Cup with Germany in 2014
  • Hernandez won it with France in 2018
  • Sommer was Switzerland's keeper through that same era

None of them are running Estrela's training sessions. But their involvement signals the kind of network-driven ownership model that's become common in European football — famous names opening doors, attracting sponsors, and making a modest Portuguese club suddenly very easy to pitch to potential signings.

Estrela finished one place above the relegation zone last season. The next twelve months will show whether €40 million buys them stability or ambition.
