Senegal's federation president just accused the national team's doctor of being a gynaecologist. That's the level of dysfunction being aired in public right now.
Abdoulaye Fall, head of Senegal's football federation, told a press conference on Monday that the squad's doctor lacked the specialist background required to support a team at a World Cup. "Based on the feedback I received, the players were not sufficiently reassured about being supported by him," Fall said. The federation reportedly had to scramble for additional medical expertise mid-tournament just to keep the squad from spiralling into panic. "Health comes before everything," Fall added — which sounds reasonable, and also like something you'd say when you've already made a mess.
The doctor's camp is not staying quiet
The Senegalese Association of Sports Medicine pushed back immediately, calling the allegations "unfounded and defamatory." They made clear that team doctor Abderahmane Fediore holds a specialist diploma in sports medicine and sports biology from Cheikh Anta Diop University's faculty of medicine. He previously ran the physiotherapy department at Fann Hospital. He's been Senegal's team doctor since 2017 — three World Cups, five Africa Cup of Nations tournaments. That's not a short-term appointment you hand to someone whose expertise lies elsewhere.
So either the federation president has got his facts badly wrong, or there's a deeper internal war being waged through press conferences. Neither is a good look.
Context matters here
Senegal came into this World Cup off the back of winning January's Africa Cup of Nations, beating Morocco in the final. They were supposed to be contenders. Instead, they lost their opening two group games to France and Norway, then somehow surrendered a 2-0 lead with five minutes left against Belgium in the last 32, losing 3-2 in extra time.
Coach Pape Bouna Thiaw was sacked on Saturday. Now the team doctor is being publicly questioned. For anyone who had Senegal priced as a dark horse before the tournament — and the bookmakers did — this is the autopsy in real time.
Whether the medical row is genuine concern or convenient scapegoating, the federation is clearly looking for explanations. The players are gone, the coach is gone, and now the knives are out for anyone left in the building.
