Kylian Mbappé didn't build himself. Behind France's all-time leading scorer is a family that has been in football for decades — a father who coached him before he could shave, a mother who turned his career into a multi-company business empire, and two brothers who followed him onto the pitch.
The family connection to football runs deep. Wilfrid Mbappé spent more than 20 years coaching at AS Bondy, the local Parisian club that became the cradle for the entire family. He was the one who first spotted what his son was becoming. "I quickly realized he had something special," Wilfrid told L'Équipe in 2022. He wasn't wrong.
The Brothers Who Followed in His Footsteps
Ethan Mbappé, born in 2006, is the one to watch. He came through PSG's academy, made his senior debut at 15 in December 2023, and signed his first professional contract with Lille in 2024. He's chosen to stay in France — deliberately. "I think was the best project. It's one of the best clubs in France," he said. Modest framing, but tactically sound. Lille have a track record of developing young talent into something real, and Ethan needs minutes, not a famous bench.
Kylian later admitted he might have stayed at PSG himself had Ethan remained there. That's a telling detail — it suggests the brotherly bond is genuine, not just good PR.
Then there's Jirès Kembo Ekoko, Kylian's older adopted brother. Born in Kinshasa in 1988, Jirès was sent to France at six and eventually taken in by the Mbappé family. His biological father played in Zaire's 1974 World Cup squad, so football was always in the DNA. Jirès signed with Rennes as a teenager, made over 100 appearances for the club, and finished his career at Al Ain in the UAE before retiring in 2019. A solid professional career, even if the spotlight never found him the way it found his younger brother.
The Business Behind the Brand
Fayza Lamari — Kylian's mother and former handball player — is arguably as important to his story as any coach he's ever had. When he joined Monaco at 15, she quit her job and hasn't looked back. She now heads multiple companies around his career: Interconnected Venture, content firm Zebra Valley, and Ohzara, a family real estate operation. She also launched the FLA agency in 2022, representing both Kylian and Ethan.
She manages the Inspired by KM Foundation too, and she negotiated her terms clearly. "At first, I told him we'd split it 50/50," she told Le Parisien in 2024. "But we discussed it and settled on 30%." That's a third of the companies' profits going to the foundation — and a mother who clearly knows her leverage.
Kylian joined Real Madrid in 2024, scored enough to win the European Golden Boot, and continues to operate as the most commercially and athletically significant footballer on the planet right now. The family structure around him isn't incidental to that. It's load-bearing.
