"We cannot justify continuing to support Gianni Infantino's candidacy." That's the Swiss Football Association, Infantino's own footballing homeland, withdrawing the backing it gave him just months ago in June 2026.
The SFV Executive Committee didn't bury this in diplomatic language. They cited specific failures: regulatory confusion around the Balogun case, institutional accountability issues tied to FIFA Forward Enterprise, and a pattern of decision-making that they say fundamentally undermines trust in FIFA's leadership. These aren't vague grievances. They're structural.
What actually changed
The SFV had supported Infantino's re-election bid. Then they reassessed. SFV President Peter Knäbel acknowledged that FIFA's September 21 letter was "an important signal" — but important signals aren't the same as answers.
"Key questions regarding the background, responsibilities, and decision-making processes remain unanswered," Knäbel said. When a national association publicly admits it can't get straight answers from the body that governs world football, that's not a PR problem. That's a governance crisis.
FIFA has had its credibility challenged before, of course. But this is Switzerland — a country with deep institutional ties to FIFA, home to its headquarters in Zurich. When they publicly break ranks, it carries a different weight than criticism from associations with a longer history of friction with Zurich.
The Balogun case and what it signals
The specific mention of the Balogun case — which raised questions about regulatory clarity and competition integrity — points to something punters and clubs alike have reason to care about. Inconsistent rule application at the highest level of football governance doesn't stay contained to boardrooms. It filters down into how competitions are run, how eligibility decisions are made, and ultimately how results are determined.
Whether Infantino weathers this particular defection or not, the SFV's statement is now on the record. And the questions they say remain unanswered are still unanswered.
