Ballon d'Or 2026 Votes Are In — And Nobody Knows Who's Going to Win

The ballots are locked. Voting for the 2026 men's Ballon d'Or closed Monday, and for the first time in years, nobody has a real idea who's going to lift the trophy.

That's not posturing. The betting markets reflect it. Harry Kane sits at the top, his Bundesliga goal haul doing the talking. But Lamine Yamal and Kylian Mbappé are right behind him, and the gap between first and fifth — which includes Lionel Messi and Rodri — is narrow enough that a few jury ballots going a different direction could flip everything.

A five-horse race with no real frontrunner

The jury is 100 journalists, each representing one of the top 100 FIFA-ranked nations. They ranked 10 players from an initial shortlist of 30, distributing points on a sliding scale: 15 for first place down to 1 for tenth. Three criteria govern the vote — individual performance, team success, and fair play.

What makes this edition genuinely unpredictable is that strong cases exist across multiple countries and clubs. In Germany, Kane's numbers are the argument. In Argentina, Messi's World Cup at 39 — a performance that defied logic — has his nation pushing hard. France wants the award to land at PSG after the club's standout season, with Kvaratskhelia, Dembélé, or Fabián Ruiz all in the conversation. Spain, meanwhile, is splitting its campaign between Lamine, Fabián, and World Cup Golden Ball winner Rodri.

Ousmane Dembélé is the defending champion, and whoever wins will be succeeding him at the 70th edition of the award.

London Palladium, October 26

The ceremony takes place at the London Palladium on Monday, October 26, with 2,000 guests expected. The venue choice is fitting — the event will pay tribute to Stanley Matthews, the English winger who won the inaugural Ballon d'Or back in 1956.

Seventy years on, the race to be called the world's best player is as unsettled as it's ever been. Kane's odds make him the market's pick, but in a vote this fragmented, the favourite label doesn't carry much weight. The count will tell the real story.
