The Man Behind JJ Gabriel's Manchester United Exit

JJ Gabriel hasn't played a single minute for Manchester United's first team. He turned 16 on Tuesday. And he's already the most talked-about teenager in European football.

The reason his situation has escalated so fast isn't mystery — it's math. Having an EU passport means Gabriel can now legally agree a deal with a club inside the European Union. The clock that was frozen by his age just started running. Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, PSG, and Barcelona are all monitoring the situation. Chelsea, on the English side, are understood to be keen too. Despite Barca sporting director Deco's public denial, it's widely believed the Catalan club remain very much in the picture — especially given that Gabriel has been training in Castelldefels since leaving Carrington.

A falling out that was always coming

The break with United came quickly and, in hindsight, predictably. Gabriel had a strong pre-season — featuring against Atletico Madrid in Stockholm, training with the senior squad, bagging a hat-trick for the U21s against Sabah FK in the UEFA Youth League. Then United left him out of the Champions League squad to face that same Sabah FK side. That was enough.

His camp pulled him out of Carrington almost immediately. United had planned to hand him his senior debut in the Carabao Cup against Brighton. That never happened. The teenager was already gone, relocating to Barcelona while the club had no legal mechanism to stop a 15-year-old walking.

Joe O'Cearuill, Gabriel's father and a former Republic of Ireland international, is understood to be a central figure in how this played out. Reports suggest the family have long harboured ambitions of Gabriel playing for Barcelona specifically. If that's true, United may have been little more than a development stop — never the destination.

The agent who maps careers, not just transfers

The man now steering this transfer is Ali Barat of Epic Sports. If his name isn't familiar yet, the deals are: he brokered Dean Huijsen's move from Bournemouth to Real Madrid and Nicolas Jackson's switch from Chelsea to Bayern Munich in the 2025 summer window — 15 transfers in total across that window.

Barat grew up in London supporting Chelsea, born in Iran, and built his philosophy around a tight client roster and long-term career architecture rather than volume. "Strategy begins with acknowledging that every negotiation must fit into a long-term career architecture, never just a one-off transaction," he told Forbes in 2025 after being named Best Agent for the second time in three years at the European Golden Boy ceremony.

He also keeps his client list deliberately small. "We prioritised the concept of representing a small, elite group of top-level players and high-potential talents rather than managing a vast portfolio," he said. That selectivity matters here — it means when Barat signs someone like Gabriel, there's already a plan mapped out. Destinations. Timelines. Contingencies.

Which is precisely why United's deviation from the script — leaving Gabriel out of the Champions League squad without apparent prior agreement — likely felt like a breach of the plan rather than just a management decision. At the first sign of misalignment, Barat's instinct was to move. That's not impulsive. That's the model working exactly as designed.

  • Gabriel scored two goals and two assists against Ipswich Town and Leicester City in Premier League 2
  • He bagged a hat-trick against Sabah FK in the UEFA Youth League before his camp requested a move
  • Barcelona, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, PSG and Chelsea are all tracking the situation
  • Barat completed 15 transfers in the 2025 summer window, including Huijsen to Real Madrid and Jackson to Bayern

United are powerless now. The boy is 16, EU passport in hand, and represented by an agent who treats career planning like a multi-year project rather than a series of reactive deals. Whatever comes next — and Barcelona seems the most emotionally loaded destination given the family's ambitions — Barat will have already gamed out the options. United are left watching from the outside.
