"I don't want to break bad news, but Messi's father just died." Those eight words, broadcast live on Luzu TV during the World Cup, have ended Florencia Pena's career at the network.
The Argentine presenter made the false claim after Lionel Messi appeared visibly emotional following the first of his three goals against Algeria. It was wrong. Jorge Messi is alive — dealing with a health situation, yes, but alive and reportedly recovering favorably according to a statement later released by the family.
A mistake that couldn't be walked back
Pena issued an apology and announced her resignation the same day. "I am deeply ashamed to have been the vehicle for this pain," she said, adding that the false information had been fed to her during the live broadcast by production. She took responsibility anyway. "Even so, I take responsibility for being part of the mistake."
Luzu TV didn't stop there — the network parted ways with everyone involved. "Broadcasting sensitive information without proper prior verification is unacceptable," they said in their own statement. That's about as clear a mea culpa as you'll get from a media outlet.
The Messi family's response was measured but pointed: "A person's health and the peace of mind of their loved ones should not be the subject of speculation or irresponsible media interest." They didn't need to say more.
Argentina push on regardless
On the pitch, none of this derails Argentina's campaign. The defending champions top Group J, level on points with Austria but holding a goal advantage. Their next fixture is June 22 at AT&T Stadium in Dallas — win it and they're through to the knockouts. A draw may even be enough, with the top eight third-place finishers also advancing.
Messi scored a hat-trick against Algeria. Whatever was weighing on him before kick-off, he carried it onto the pitch and turned it into three goals. Argentina's odds of progressing look as solid as ever.
The Messi family's statement said Jorge is "recovering and progressing favorably." That's the only update that matters here.
