How the other categories work
It's not just the main award on the table. The Yashin Trophy for best goalkeeper runs on the same journalist-panel model. The women's Ballon d'Or is decided by 50 international women's football journalists. And the Kopa Trophy — handed to the best player under 21 — is nominated by a panel of 32 former Ballon d'Or winners, with a 10-player shortlist.
On the night, all 30 men's finalists are ranked from bottom to top, with the top-ranked player taking the trophy.
