Xabi Alonso isn't entertaining the idea that Estevao Willian wants out of Chelsea. "Este is fully involved and with a very good attitude every day," he said ahead of Wednesday's Carabao Cup tie against Leeds — a game in which the Brazilian is expected to start.
Reports out of Brazil last week painted a different picture: a 19-year-old frustrated by a lack of minutes, potentially eyeing the January window as an escape route. Alonso's response was measured but firm. Private conversations have been had, he said, and they'll stay private.
The minutes don't lie
Here's the context those assurances can't fully paper over: Estevao has played 16 minutes across three Premier League games this season, excluding stoppage time. Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers have locked down the wide positions, and Alonso clearly rates both. That's not a slight on Estevao — it's just the competitive reality of a squad Chelsea have spent enormous money assembling.
At 19, making the jump from Brazilian football to a Chelsea side challenging at the top of the Premier League was always going to involve patience. Alonso knows that. "The season is going to be long," he said, which is the kind of thing managers say — but also, in this case, is simply true. Rotations will come. Injuries always do.
The Leeds cup game is a chance for Estevao to build some momentum. If he starts and produces, the January rumours quiet down on their own. If the minutes stay scarce into December, those reports from Brazil will start looking less like speculation and more like a warning shot.
Barco and the injury picture
Estevao isn't the only fringe player Alonso is managing carefully. Valentin Barco, the Argentine signed from RC Strasbourg last summer, is also set to feature against Leeds after similarly limited top-flight exposure. Alonso described him as "patient" and "intelligent" — standard manager praise, but the subtext is clear: both players are being eased in rather than trusted immediately.
On the injury front, Moises Caicedo misses the cup tie but could return for Saturday's Premier League home game against Hull City. Jordan Henderson, Marco Palestra and Emmanuel Emegha are all ruled out for the Leeds match. Chelsea's squad depth is being tested early, which should organically create the opportunities Estevao and Barco are waiting for.
"He has a very good attitude, very good mentality to prepare for every game and to be ready for the team," Alonso said of Estevao. Wednesday night is the first real chance to show it on the pitch.
