Luca Bombino is heading to Stoke City for $5 million, and San Diego FC used the closing of the MLS secondary transfer window to quietly remake their roster around that sale. This wasn't a panic sell — it was a calculated move by a club that knows exactly what it's building.
The 20-year-old left back had been on loan from LAFC when San Diego handed him a contract extension in January, which tells you they always saw him as an asset to sell rather than a cornerstone to keep. Fifty-six league matches, 11 goal contributions, and a spot in the youngest backline in MLS history. Stoke get a genuinely exciting prospect; San Diego pocket the fee and a sell-on clause.
"Over the past 18 months, Luca has developed tremendously," said Sporting Director Tyler Heaps. That development is now Stoke's to benefit from — Bombino was already off the bench against Norwich on September 1st.
Duah Extended, Bakambu Signed
The more important long-term piece may be the Manu Duah extension. The 2025 MLS SuperDraft's No. 1 overall pick came in as a midfielder, converted to center back, and has made 44 starts across two seasons. He's locked in through 2029-30 with a club option beyond that. At the rate he's developing, San Diego will be fielding similar buyout inquiries to Bombino's within two years.
The club also addressed an attack that had struggled all season. Lewis Morgan — the marquee offseason signing — produced zero goals and three assists in 779 minutes before being shipped to Toronto FC for a 2026 International Roster Slot. That's a brutal return on investment, however you frame it. In his place, San Diego signed Cédric Bakambu on a free. The 35-year-old Congo DR forward played three World Cup matches this summer and knows where the goal is. Whether he has enough left at this level is the real question.
Elias Achouri and Gabriel Pirani, added in July, have already contributed four goals between them. The attack looks meaningfully different than it did in August.
Can They Actually Make the Playoffs?
San Diego sit eighth in the Western Conference at 8-6-8, with 30 points and 10 earned from their last five matches. The window is narrow but open. Their defensive odds look shakier without Bombino, though Kieran Sargeant and Sam Vines — loaned from Houston for a 2028 third-round pick — are in line to cover the left back slot.
The club also brought in 18-year-old David Mimbang on loan from FC Nordsjælland through the Right to Dream network, another bet on long-term development over short-term output.
And then there's Hirving Lozano, loaned to LA Galaxy after being frozen out — who promptly scored against San Diego, in a 3-1 loss for the Galaxy. Whatever happened behind the scenes there, it clearly wasn't working.
San Diego travel to Orlando City on September 5th. The squad that shows up there looks nothing like the one that started the summer. Whether that's progress depends entirely on the next eight weeks.
