Brittany Mahomes built something Patrick can't claim: a women's soccer club that's actually winning

The Kansas City Current just won the 2025 NWSL Shield — the best regular-season record in the league — and they did it in a stadium that cost around $140 million and was built specifically for a women's professional team. Brittany Mahomes has been part of that ownership group since day one.

That last detail matters. Patrick didn't join the ownership until 2023. Brittany was in from December 2020, when the club didn't even have a name yet.

From Iceland to ownership

Before NFL cameras made her a celebrity sideline fixture, Brittany was a soccer player. She studied kinesiology at the University of Texas at Tyler, played professionally in Iceland, then pivoted to fitness entrepreneurship before co-founding the Current alongside Angie and Chris Long. That's not a vanity ownership stake — it's someone who actually knows what competitive athletes need from a club structure.

The club rebranded as Kansas City Current in 2021. By 2024, they were scoring 57 regular-season goals and racking up 16 wins. By 2025, they had their first Shield.

CPKC Stadium opened in March 2024 on Kansas City's riverfront — 11,500 capacity, privately funded, built around the women's game rather than borrowed from it. The first match ended 5-4 against Portland Thorns in front of a full house. A women's team, in their own building, sold out. The significance of that shouldn't need explaining, but in the context of how women's professional sports has historically been resourced, it's a sharp contrast.

What this means for the NWSL's competitive picture

A club with proper infrastructure, growing attendance, and now silverware is the kind of operation that attracts better players and better sponsors. The Current's trajectory makes them a genuine title contender — not just a well-meaning project — and that changes how the rest of the NWSL has to approach recruitment and investment.

Brittany's involvement doesn't get credit for every tactical decision or training ground detail. Coaches, players, and the full ownership group built this. But the commitment was real and early, and CPKC Stadium is the most concrete evidence of it. The Current won the Shield playing in a stadium no other women's team in the country has.
