Casemiro Says Carrick Came Too Late to Change His Mind About Leaving Man United

Casemiro is leaving Manchester United, but he's made clear the door wasn't entirely closed — it just wasn't opened in time. The 33-year-old told the Sun he believes he would have stayed another year had Michael Carrick been appointed head coach earlier than January.

That's a pointed statement. Not directed at Carrick, who by all accounts has handled the Brazilian with care — rotating him intelligently, managing his minutes, and getting results. Under Carrick, Casemiro completed 90 minutes in four consecutive league games for the first time this season. A 33-year-old defensive midfielder finishing games. That's not a coincidence.

What Carrick Actually Fixed

The problem was never Casemiro's quality. Since arriving from Real Madrid in the summer of 2022, he's been one of United's most reliable players — composed, positional, experienced at the highest level. The issue was how he was being used. Carrick clearly identified that and adjusted accordingly.

Too little, too late. Casemiro has already said his goodbyes at Carrington, handing gifts to staff he's worked with over the past two years. Sunday's home game against Nottingham Forest — United's final match at Old Trafford this season — will be his farewell to the supporters.

After that, Inter Miami and MLS await. A deal is reported to be in place. He won't be the first European veteran to make that move, and he certainly won't be the last.

United's Midfield Problem Doesn't End Here

United now have a real gap to fill at the base of midfield. Casemiro gave them something specific: the ability to screen a defence, win the ball back, and do it without drama. Those qualities don't walk through the door just because you open it — the club will be searching for a replacement this summer, and the market for that profile is competitive and expensive.

Whoever Carrick — or the next permanent manager — brings in will be working with a higher bar than they might expect. Casemiro, even in decline, set a standard. The search starts now.
