Six household names. Zero clubs. The free agent market is quietly filling up with players who, not long ago, were among the most coveted footballers on the planet.
Karim Benzema's Al-Hilal contract was terminated this week — just six months in — after a string of new arrivals, including Ollie Watkins from Aston Villa, shunted him down the depth chart. A Ballon d'Or winner, reduced to surplus stock in the Saudi Pro League. At 38, his options are narrowing fast. Another move within Saudi or a late-career run in MLS seem likeliest. Neither is the ending his Real Madrid years deserved.
Pogba and Sancho: Two Very Different Career Collapses
Paul Pogba's story is different in nature but equally grim in outcome. The 33-year-old returned from an 18-month doping ban in March 2025, signed for Monaco on a two-year deal, played six games, and was released last month. Six games. That's the sum total of his Monaco chapter. Whether the body simply won't cooperate anymore is the uncomfortable question no one around him seems willing to answer publicly.
Jadon Sancho's situation is arguably the most troubling of the group — because at 26, there's no age excuse. Released by Manchester United after a spell that cost the club £73 million and delivered almost nothing, the winger spent time on loan at both Aston Villa and Chelsea without recapturing the form that made Dortmund fans worship him. The talent is still there, theoretically. The wages he'll be expecting are the problem. Clubs will be interested, but not at Old Trafford rates.
Raheem Sterling, 31, has moved through Liverpool, Manchester City, Chelsea, Arsenal and most recently Feyenoord — who released him after just three months and eight appearances. Eight appearances. That's a trial, not a stint.
The Others Who Could Still Find a Home
Riyad Mahrez, 35, at least has numbers to sell: 37 goals in 122 appearances across three seasons with Al Ahli, plus an appearance at the 2026 World Cup with Algeria. He'll have suitors.
- Philippe Coutinho (34) — left Vasco da Gama in February, currently taking a break. MLS has been linked for a while and fits.
- Dani Carvajal (34) — 13 years at Real Madrid, now a free agent. Not the kind of CV that goes begging for long.
- David Alaba (34) — also released by Real Madrid, with a move to Manchester United mooted. Left-back cover is exactly what United failed to address in the summer window, so the logic is there even if the timing is late.
It's a strange collection of careers at a crossroads. Some will land well. Others may find that the game has simply moved on without them — and no amount of reputation changes that.
