"A part of my heart left with you." Those words, written by Aqueelah Adendorf — partner, mother of his five-year-old daughter, and by her own account, his best friend — say more about Jayden Adams than any press release could.
Adams, a 25-year-old midfielder for Mamelodi Sundowns and South Africa's national team Bafana Bafana, died unexpectedly on Saturday. The cause of death has not yet been confirmed. He was in Cape Town. South Africa's minister of sports, Gayton McKenzie, confirmed an investigation is ongoing.
60,000 fans fell silent in Miami
Before the World Cup quarterfinal between England and Norway at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, FIFA brought the entire arena to a standstill. Both squads stood at opposite ends of the pitch. The crowd — all 60,000 of them — stood with them. A moment of silence in a stadium that size carries a different kind of weight.
FIFA president Gianni Infantino spoke plainly: "It is so incredibly sad to hear that South Africa midfielder Jayden Adams has passed away just weeks after featuring in his nation's historic FIFA World Cup campaign."
Adams had been part of that campaign. He played in South Africa's 2-0 loss to Mexico and their 1-1 draw with the Czech Republic. He came off the bench in the 1-0 win over South Korea — a result that briefly kept Bafana Bafana's hopes alive. South Africa were eventually knocked out in the Round of 32, losing 1-0 to Canada on June 28 at Los Angeles Stadium. Adams didn't feature in that one. It was the last World Cup match his country played.
A loss with no easy framing
The South African Football Players Union described his passing as "an immeasurable loss to his family, teammates, clubs, the football fraternity and country at large." That's union language, but in this case it lands. Adams had just represented his country on the biggest stage the sport offers. He was 25. Whatever came next for him — a bigger club move, more caps, more time with his daughter — is simply gone.
Adendorf's Instagram post ended: "Rest easy, my angle. I love you always and forever."
The investigation into his death continues.
