Irankunda's Sporting CP Move Comes With a $130 Million Get-Out Clause.

Sporting CP didn't just sign Nestory Irankunda — they wrapped him in a $130 million release clause and sent him moonwalking through a Michael Jackson welcome video. That's how much they rate the 20-year-old Australian.

The fee from Watford is reported at around $26 million, potentially climbing to $29.5 million with add-ons. Bayern Munich, who sold Irankunda to Watford previously, will pocket nearly $10 million of that as a sell-on. For a player who hasn't yet fully established himself at a European club — either in Germany or England — Sporting's confidence is a statement in itself.

A release clause that rewrites the Socceroos ceiling

That $130 million figure is the number to focus on. It doesn't just reflect what Sporting paid — it reflects what they think Irankunda can become. The club that developed Cristiano Ronaldo during his teenage years doesn't insert nine-figure release clauses out of sentiment. They put them in when they believe the player will outgrow them.

Irankunda is signed through to 2031 on a five-year deal, and he'll immediately get something Watford couldn't offer: Champions League football. Sporting finished second in the Primeira Liga last season behind Porto to secure their place in Europe's top club competition, and they've started the new campaign by beating Vitoria 3-2 on Friday.

"Any child or person who loves football dreams of playing in the UEFA Champions League," Irankunda said. "Having this opportunity will be fantastic and a dream come true." Hard to argue with the logic of the move from his side.

Australian football is having a moment

This signing lands just days after teen defender Lucas Herrington became Australia's most expensive footballer ever — joining Hull City from Colorado Rapids in a deal reported at $33 million. The Socceroos' World Cup run to the last 32 clearly put a spotlight on the country's talent pool, and clubs across Europe are now acting on it.

  • Patrick Beach — Melbourne City to Troyes (France)
  • Cammy Devlin — Hearts to Rangers (Scotland)
  • Ajdin Hrustic — Heracles Almelo to Al Nasr (UAE)
  • Jackson Irvine — St Pauli to Cerezo Osaka (Japan)
  • Awer Mabil — CD Castellon to Melbourne City (Australia)
  • Paul Okon-Engstler — Sydney FC to FC Koln (Germany)
  • Lucas Herrington — Colorado Rapids to Hull City (England)

For Sporting's title rivals in the Primeira Liga, Irankunda's arrival adds another attacking option to a squad already back in the Champions League. His odds of becoming a household name in European football have never looked better — and that $130 million clause suggests Sporting are betting heavily on exactly that.
