Jurgen Klopp might have left Liverpool, but he's still proving what a class act he is. The German legend actually encouraged his former assistant Pep Lijnders to take a job at Manchester City - one of Liverpool's biggest rivals.
Lijnders spent years as Klopp's trusted right-hand man at Anfield. When both left Liverpool in 2024, the Dutchman had a brief stint at Red Bull Salzburg before Premier League opportunities came knocking. And who came calling? None other than Pep Guardiola at Manchester City.
Now you'd think joining City would be awkward given Lijnders' Merseyside connections. But when he spoke to Klopp about the opportunity, the former Liverpool boss couldn't have been more supportive. In fact, Klopp's response was brilliant.
Klopp's Hilarious Response
"When I spoke with Jurgen he was so clear: 'If you don't do it, I will take the assistant job!'" Lijnders revealed. That's classic Klopp - making it clear his mate shouldn't pass up such a massive opportunity, even if it means helping Liverpool's rivals.
The chance to work with Guardiola was simply too good to refuse. "Pep's brilliant, of course," Lijnders said. "He has a passion and a game-understanding from a different planet, in my opinion."
For punters keeping an eye on City's form, Lijnders' addition to Guardiola's backroom staff could be significant. His tactical knowledge from Liverpool's successful years adds another dimension to an already formidable coaching setup at the Etihad.
Klopp Won't Manage Another English Club
Meanwhile, Klopp has been absolutely crystal clear about his own future. He's stated he'll never manage another English club besides Liverpool - not now, not ever. "I will never, ever manage a different club in England than Liverpool, 100 per cent," he declared.
Lijnders faces his first return to Anfield next weekend when City visit. He insists there won't be any divided loyalties. "No, I'm a professional," he said firmly. "When I go to Anfield it will be special - maybe more special for my family than me - but my mindset is to win and to try to beat them."
That Liverpool versus City fixture just got even more interesting. Lijnders knows Liverpool's players and tactics inside out, which could give City an edge. It's the kind of subplot that makes the Premier League title race even more compelling for fans and bettors alike.
