Messi's 39th Birthday at the World Cup: Custom Shirts, a Cake, and Five Goals in Two Games.

Lionel Messi turned 39 at a World Cup where he's already scored five goals in two matches. His teammates, clearly feeling the moment, marked the occasion with custom shirts bearing their own photos with Messi on the front — and a message on the back that reads less like a birthday card and more like a love letter to a shared era.

"To the man who changed our lives, gave us unforgettable moments, and made us believe that dreams are possible ... The best part wasn't just seeing it — it was living it with you. Happy birthday, Captain; we love you." That was the full message, per an ESPN translation. Whatever you think of the sentiment, these are World Cup winners saying it. They've earned the right.

The pitch is backing the party up

Messi opened the tournament with a hat trick against Algeria. Then added two more against Austria. Every single Argentina goal so far has come from the man celebrating his birthday. That's not sentiment — that's a one-man demolition of defenses that had a full tournament to prepare for him.

Pedri, who played alongside Messi at Barcelona and knows better than most what it looks like up close, put it plainly: "He sees football a little before the others and knows where to be to score a goal. What he does with the age he has, only he can do."

At 39, that's the part that should unsettle anyone trying to price Argentina's tournament odds. Messi isn't running on reputation. He's running on goals.

He also got a cake from Pan Caliente, a Kansas City bakery founded by Argentine chef Silvia Miguel. A hat trick, two more goals, custom shirts from your teammates, and a birthday cake from a compatriot. Not a bad Wednesday.
