Mourinho's targeting a relegated Premier League standout for his Real Madrid rebuild

Jose Mourinho hasn't even been confirmed as Real Madrid manager yet, and he's already picking players. Mateus Fernandes — 21 years old, West Ham, just relegated from the Premier League — is on his shortlist.

The timing makes sense. Fernandes was one of the more quietly impressive midfielders in the Premier League last season: 36 appearances, three goals, four assists, and a level of defensive discipline and positional intelligence that most 21-year-olds haven't figured out yet. His side went down, but that wasn't on him. If anything, relegation is what makes this move viable — West Ham's leverage just evaporated.

Why Mourinho wants him specifically

Mourinho's reported philosophy for a potential Madrid return is telling. He wants fighters. Players who subordinate individual glory to collective function. Fernandes fits that profile almost exactly — a midfielder who brings structure to his team's build-up while grinding back to protect his own box. The Sporting CP academy leaves a recognisable imprint, and it's all over how Fernandes plays.

Two seasons in England — one at Southampton, one at West Ham — and he went from promising prospect to one of the more technically complete young midfielders in the division. That's a steep development curve.

Liverpool and Arsenal are also watching. Any serious bid is expected to start around $90 million, which is significant for a relegated club that badly needs the money and knows it can't hold onto its best assets with Championship football on the schedule.

The Mendes connection and what it means for the deal

The real grease in this potential transfer is Jorge Mendes. He represents Fernandes, Mourinho, and a constellation of elite players. Real Madrid's relationship with Mendes has reportedly improved considerably, which matters when you're trying to move fast in a summer window.

Mourinho's return to the Bernabéu depends on Florentino Pérez winning the presidential election on June 7 — Benfica has already confirmed Pérez's intent to trigger Mourinho's release clause at around $17.3 million. If that goes through, Fernandes becomes a live target almost immediately.

At $90 million, Real Madrid would be paying a premium for a 21-year-old whose best football is still ahead of him. But that's exactly the kind of calculation Mourinho is making — and from a betting perspective, West Ham's relegation makes it far harder for those odds to shift in the club's favour at the negotiating table.
