"The Champions League and competing for every trophy in front of us." Rodri hadn't even cleared the arrivals terminal at El Prat Airport before setting his ambitions out plainly. No easing in. No settling for a top-four finish. The reigning World Cup MVP has come to win.

Barcelona and Manchester City agreed terms late Sunday afternoon — €60 million guaranteed, with up to €16.5 million in add-ons, €11 million of which City are expected to hit without much difficulty. City rejected two earlier bids before both clubs found common ground. The signing goes official Tuesday, with his presentation pencilled in for Wednesday at the Joan Gamper Trophy against Al Ahly.

Why Barcelona beat Real Madrid to the signing

His agent called Barça's offer "irresistible," and the pull of returning to Spain clearly outweighed the financial firepower of PSG and other suitors across Europe. Real Madrid were in the running — seriously in the running — but Rodri ultimately chose the project at Spotify Camp Nou over the one at the Bernabéu.

Part of that decision was tactical. He pointed explicitly to Barcelona's playing style and the presence of Spanish internationals he already knows inside out: Pedri, Gavi, Lamine Yamal, Dani Olmo, Pau Cubarsí, Eric García, and Joan García. Reuniting with that group in a club context, rather than just during international windows, was a genuine factor.

One reunion that won't happen: Ferran Torres, whose €50 million move to PSG created the financial space Barcelona needed to get this deal done in the first place.

Don't expect him straight away

Rodri had minor back surgery after the World Cup, and he only returned from holiday on August 14. His medical is set for Tuesday morning, building on tests done in England over the weekend. A delayed debut is the realistic expectation — which means Barcelona's early-season odds should be viewed with that caveat in mind. They've signed their midfield anchor, but he won't be available from kick-off.

He'll also need a fitness block before Hansi Flick trusts him with regular minutes. A player of his profile doesn't get rushed.

The deal is done. The plane has landed. Now Barcelona just need him healthy.
