Danny Rohl is leaving Rangers. It's not confirmed yet, but the compensation talks with RB Salzburg are advanced enough that Ibrox is already drawing up a replacement list — and Derek McInnes is near the top of it.

Multiple Scottish outlets are reporting that the Hearts head coach is on a four-man shortlist, alongside Steven Gerrard and former target Kevin Muscat. That's a wildly different set of profiles to be weighing simultaneously, which tells you either Rangers haven't decided what they want from their next manager, or they're casting wide while the Rohl situation resolves itself.

McInnes makes sense — on paper

McInnes knows Scottish football inside out. He won a League Cup at Aberdeen, kept Hearts competitive on a restricted budget, and understands the weight of the Old Firm environment without ever having been swallowed by it. He's a steady hand, not a visionary — but Rangers aren't in a position to gamble on a project right now.

Gerrard, meanwhile, is a name that generates headlines rather than answers. His Rangers tenure was genuinely good — the 55 title was historic — but his track record since then at Aston Villa and Al-Ettifaq hasn't been convincing. Sentiment is not a management strategy.

Hearts will brace for an approach if and when the deal gets done. Losing McInnes mid-window would hurt them. Whoever comes into Rangers inherits a squad that needs work, a fanbase with short patience, and a European place to chase. The sacking market for Premiership managers just got a little more volatile.

Engels attracting serious attention

Elsewhere, Napoli are tracking Celtic midfielder Arne Engels — and they're not alone. Fulham, Nottingham Forest, and Sunderland have all already submitted inquiries for the 22-year-old Belgian. That's four clubs across three different leagues circling the same player before the summer window has properly opened.

Engels had a strong debut season in Glasgow, and Celtic will want to keep him. But with Napoli's name in the mix, the asking price just went up — and so did the temptation. Celtic's midfield depth and their Champions League qualification odds both look slightly different if he walks.

On the periphery: Bournemouth's Julian Araujo is on Cruz Azul's radar after his Celtic loan, Rangers are in talks with Besiktas over a Vaclav Cerny return, and Everton have agreed a fee with Dundee United for 16-year-old striker Kai Hutchison — who reportedly rejected Wolves to make it happen. Aberdeen, meanwhile, are moving to sign Connor Ronan on a two-year deal after his exit from Colorado Rapids.

The Scottish transfer window is warming up fast. The Rohl situation is the one that changes everything else.
