Seven coaches in a single year. That's where Tunisia are. The latest man handed the poisoned chalice is Moin Chaabani, appointed on a four-year deal through to 2030 by the Tunisian Football Federation.
The context is grim. At the 2026 World Cup, Tunisia became the first Eagle of Carthage side to lose every single group stage match. A 5-1 opening humiliation by Sweden got Sabri Lamouchi sacked on the spot. Emergency call-up Hervé Renard couldn't stop the bleeding — a 4-0 loss to Japan, then 3-1 to the Netherlands. Three games, three defeats, zero points.
What Chaabani actually brings
At 45, Chaabani hasn't managed a national team before, so this is a significant step up. But his recent club record is hard to dismiss. He just left Renaissance de Berkane after delivering their first-ever Moroccan league title and the 2025 CAF Confederation Cup. Before that, two CAF Champions League titles with Esperance. He knows African football intimately — which matters, because Tunisia's next real test is the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign starting in September against Uganda, Libya and Botswana in Group H.
Those aren't fixtures that should trouble a side of Tunisia's calibre. But after a World Cup collapse of that scale, nothing can be taken for granted. Their qualifying odds will draw plenty of attention from those tracking AFCON markets — a new coach, no competitive football together yet, and a squad that needs rebuilding around a coherent identity.
The bigger problem
Chaabani is a reasonable appointment. The real question is whether anyone can bring stability to a programme that has burned through seven coaches since 2024. That kind of turnover doesn't just disrupt tactics — it dismantles player trust, team shape, and any sense of long-term direction.
The four-year contract at least signals intent to stop the revolving door. Tunisia's AFCON qualifying group is manageable. What isn't yet clear is whether Chaabani will be given the time and resources to actually rebuild — or whether the next bad result triggers another reset.
