Algeria Cut Ties With Petkovic After World Cup Exit

Algeria have ended their relationship with head coach Vladimir Petkovic, just weeks after he steered the team to the round of 32 at the 2026 World Cup — and less than a year after he signed a contract extension running to 2028.

The Algerian Football Federation confirmed the split was mutual: "The contractual relationship with the national team head coach, Mr. Vladimir Petkovic, and his coaching staff has officially come to an end today, on a mutual agreement between the two parties." Diplomatic language, but the timing says enough. You don't leave a four-year deal this early unless something broke down.

The World Cup context matters

Algeria made it through as one of the eight best third-placed teams in the expanded 48-team tournament — a fine achievement on paper. But the round of 32 exit, a 2-0 defeat to Switzerland, clearly didn't land well enough to protect a man who had only taken charge in February 2024.

Petkovic was brought in with a specific brief and seemed to have earned time with that contract renewal. Sixteen months later, he's out. It suggests the Federation wanted more than survival-by-points at the group stage, and perhaps the manner of the Switzerland defeat — clean sheet for the Europeans, nothing for Algeria — was the deciding factor.

What comes next

Algeria don't have the luxury of a long search. They open 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualification in September, drawn in Group I against Zambia, Togo, and Burundi. On paper, that's a manageable group — but walking into it without a head coach is a needless distraction. Whoever Algeria's AFCON odds rest on next will need to be named quickly.

The Federation has created a problem entirely of its own making. They handed Petkovic a long-term deal, watched him qualify for the World Cup, then pulled the plug anyway. The next coach will want clarity before he signs anything.
