Mikel Arteta has reportedly made his call: Nico Williams over Vinicius Junior. Not because Arteta doubts what Vinicius can do with the ball, but because of what he doesn't do without it.
According to reports out of Spain, Arteta's reservations about Vinicius are rooted in defensive output — or the lack of it. It's the same criticism that followed the Brazilian throughout his time at Real Madrid, and for a coach who demands his wingers track back and press, it's apparently a dealbreaker. Williams, by contrast, fits the profile: high-energy, disciplined, and now a World Cup winner with Spain after a summer tournament that confirmed he's ready for a move to one of Europe's top clubs.
Williams has apparently made his move
The timing matters here. Williams has reportedly asked his agent, Félix Tainta, to open talks with Arsenal, Chelsea, and Barcelona. That's a player who knows his value and isn't waiting around. Tainta publicly told Spanish radio to "stay calm" after the World Cup — which is exactly what agents say when talks are already in motion.
Arsenal's left flank has been flagged as a problem area. Gabriel Martinelli's future is uncertain despite Leandro Trossard already heading to Besiktas, leaving Arteta genuinely short of quality wide options. Williams would walk straight into the starting XI.
The financial angle is real too. Vinicius would command eye-watering wages and a transfer fee that even a newly-crowned Premier League champion would feel. Williams is expensive, but not in the same galaxy.
What this means for Arsenal's odds
Arsenal won their first league title in 22 years last season and reached the Champions League final — losing on penalties to PSG. They are no longer a project. They are a destination. Landing Williams would signal that clearly, and his market value as a starting winger would only inflate further if he hits the ground running at the Emirates.
Vinicius is staying at Real Madrid anyway — Sky Sports reported Tuesday that the club have no intention of selling and new manager Jose Mourinho wants him central to his rebuild. The door was never really open.
So it's Williams or bust on the left side. His agent says stay calm. Arsenal's pursuit suggests things are anything but.
