Raphinha is heading back to Barcelona before Brazil even boards the plane to Kolkata. The CBF confirmed Wednesday that he has a muscle edema in the posterior part of his right thigh — no structural damage, but enough for Brazil to cut him loose from the squad ahead of Saturday's friendly against India.
The statement from the Brazilian Football Confederation was clinical and cautious: "a small muscle edema in the posterior part of his right thigh." No replacement will be called up. He's simply gone.
The history is what makes this serious
On paper, swelling without a structural tear isn't a crisis. In isolation, you shrug and give it two weeks. But Raphinha's right thigh is not an isolated problem — it's a recurring one. He picked up four separate injuries in the same region last season and missed over 150 days of football. That context changes everything.
Barcelona felt it immediately. The club had already flagged concern when Raphinha came off at halftime of Brazil's second match against Australia with discomfort in that thigh — the same thigh, the same area — after scoring from the penalty spot and being one of the best players on the pitch. Hansi Flick's side pushed for him to come home rather than travel to India, and the CBF agreed.
That's a significant call. Friendly or not, national teams don't typically release players for minor muscular complaints unless there's real pressure to do so. Barcelona applied it.
The Clásico clock is ticking
The timing could not be more pointed. El Clásico is scheduled for October 25 at Camp Nou. Raphinha is Barcelona's captain and arguably their most influential attacking player this season. Any disruption to his preparation for that fixture matters — both for Flick's plans and for anyone with money on Barcelona's performance in the season's defining early fixture.
He'll be assessed by Barça's medical staff as soon as he lands in Spain. What they find will determine everything. Right now, all anyone knows is that the same thigh that cost him half of last season is flaring up again, eight days before a Clásico.
