Houston Dash have cut ties with head coach Fabrice Gautrat and technical director Twila Kilgore, effective immediately — with six games still to play and any hope of a playoff spot already looking thin.
Assistant coach Jaime Frias steps in as interim for the rest of the season. It's a firefighting appointment, not a vision. The real search for a permanent head coach starts now.
A record that made this inevitable
The Dash sit 12th in a 16-team NWSL, carrying a 7-12-5 record. Their last win was a 5-0 thumping of last-placed Chicago Stars on August 19 — the kind of result that flatters a bad run rather than ending it. Six points off the postseason places, the math is grim but not impossible. Whether Frias can extract anything meaningful from a squad that's clearly lost its thread is another question entirely.
Gautrat only arrived ahead of the 2025 season as the club's sixth head coach. He exits with an 8-12-6 record across his full tenure — never enough to push the team into the postseason. Kilgore's story is more layered: she spent three years as an assistant at the Dash between 2019 and 2021, climbed through the U.S. national team structure, and briefly held the interim head coach role for the senior women's side before Emma Hayes took over in 2024. Coming back to Houston didn't give her the ending that record deserved.
Club president Angela Hucles Mangano framed it as an ambition call. "We have a responsibility to evaluate our trajectory and determine what is needed to achieve the ambitions we have for this team," she said. It's the kind of statement that sounds decisive but translates simply: results weren't good enough, and the direction wasn't convincing anyone.
A league reshuffling its coaching decks
The timing isn't entirely coincidental. The NWSL is in the middle of a wider coaching reset. Kansas City parted with Vlatko Andonovski after a strong season, moving him sideways into a sporting director role. Orlando fired Seb Hines — the man who delivered the Pride their first-ever NWSL title in 2024 — which suggests no one's job is safe regardless of what they've won. Bay FC are closing in on ex-Chelsea general manager Paul Green as their head of football.
The league is restructuring at pace. For the Dash, the pressure is now on ownership to identify a coach who can actually build something. Interim appointments and mid-season sackings don't move a club forward — the next permanent hire will tell you everything about how seriously Houston is taking this.
