Huntsville City FC has appointed Penn Garvich as managing director of business operations, the MLS NEXT Pro club announced Wednesday. The hire signals the club is getting serious about building the business infrastructure to match its ambitions on the pitch.
Garvich arrives with a résumé that spans professional golf tours, title sponsorship management, and a stint as deputy athletic director at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. He's not a football lifer — and that might be the point. Clubs at this level don't just need tacticians in the boardroom. They need people who know how to sell a brand and grow a fanbase from the ground up.
A community hire with commercial intent
Garvich has lived in Huntsville since 2019, which matters more than it might seem. He's not parachuting in from a bigger market. He ran the Korn Ferry Tour's Huntsville Championship for three years, managed sponsorship for the Valero Texas Open, and worked the 41st Ryder Cup and 96th PGA Championship for the PGA of America. He understands event operations and corporate partnerships — two things a young club trying to build matchday culture desperately needs.
"The focus will continue to be on deepening our ties throughout the Huntsville community and delivering a memorable matchday experience," Garvich said. That's the right language. Huntsville City is still earning its identity in north Alabama, and the path to sustained attendance and sponsor revenue runs through local relationships, not national marketing campaigns.
Before sports business, Garvich spent six years as a field artillery officer in the US Army, including time with the 101st Airborne Division. It's an unusual background for a football executive, but the organizational discipline that comes with it doesn't hurt when you're trying to build something from scratch.
What this means for the club's trajectory
Huntsville City is Nashville SC's MLS NEXT Pro affiliate, which gives it a built-in pipeline and institutional support — but the day-to-day commercial work still has to happen locally. Garvich's job is to make Wicks Family Field at Joe Davis Stadium feel like a destination, not just a Tuesday night obligation. Whether that translates into real revenue growth and deeper community roots will define whether this hire looks smart in two years or forgettable.
The club noted he'll be working alongside Nashville SC on driving growth "on and off the pitch." That coordination matters for a development club trying to build its own identity without drifting too far from the parent organization's brand.
