That's not a negotiating tactic or a PR story — Guardiola simply isn't interested in stepping into another job right now. After ten years at Manchester City, the 54-year-old Spaniard is taking time away from management. ESPN reported the outreach happened, confirmed the brevity, and noted three other national teams have also been in touch. All of them, presumably, got the same answer.
Why Italy were even calling
The Azzurri's manager position is vacant, and their track record over the past decade gives this search real urgency. Italy, four-time World Cup winners, have missed the last two tournaments entirely. That's not a rough patch — it's a structural crisis, and whoever walks into that job inherits a rebuild, not a contender.
Guardiola would have been a statement hire. His decade at City produced 17 major trophies, including the 2022-23 Premier League, Champions League, and FA Cup treble — a feat only Manchester United had managed before, back in 1999. Before City, he transformed Barcelona and Bayern Munich. The man has won everywhere he's been. Of course Italy called.
But wanting Guardiola and getting Guardiola are two very different things, and right now nobody's getting him.
What this means for Italy's search
The federation will need to move on quickly. The vacancy has been sitting open, and chasing a manager who's made clear he needs a break doesn't accelerate anything. Whoever they do land — whether a domestic name or another foreign appointment — will carry the weight of two consecutive World Cup absences into their first press conference.
Italy's next manager betting markets are worth watching as the list of realistic candidates narrows. Guardiola's name can officially come off it.
