The 2028 Los Angeles Olympics just got a lot more interesting for soccer fans. LA28 dropped the tournament schedule on Monday, and it's unlike anything we've seen before at the Games.
Here's the kicker: the soccer action starts four days before the opening ceremony. That's right, while everyone's waiting for the big Olympic kickoff on July 14, soccer fans will already be four days into the tournament.
The men's competition launches July 10 with four group stage matches spread across New York, Columbus, Nashville, and St. Louis. The women follow the next day on July 11, with games happening at all six preliminary round venues, including San José and San Diego.
Historic Format With Extra Rest Days
This year's tournament is making history in more ways than one. For the first time ever, the Olympics will feature 12 women's teams and 8 men's teams. That's an expansion from previous formats.
The International Olympic Committee Executive Board gave this tournament the longest competition window of any sport in Olympic history. Why? They wanted teams to have proper rest between matches.
Each team gets two full days of rest between group stage games. Between the final group match and quarterfinals? Three days off. That's huge for player fitness and could impact how teams perform in knockout rounds.
The knockout stages fire up on July 20 for the men and July 21 for the women. One women's quarterfinal will happen at the legendary Rose Bowl in Pasadena.
Where the Action Happens
The Rose Bowl might be iconic, but it's only hosting five matches total. These include men's and women's semifinals on July 24, plus both gold medal matches on July 28 and 29.
San Diego's SnapDragon Stadium is the real workhorse here. It's hosting 11 matches – the most of any venue. Beyond three days of women's group games, it'll feature a women's quarterfinal, semifinals for both tournaments, and both bronze medal matches.
For bettors looking ahead, those extended rest periods could be game-changers. Teams will be fresher for knockout rounds than in previous Olympics, which might favor possession-based sides that typically tire opponents out.
Ticket sales are already heating up. LA28 is letting fans buy up to 12 soccer tickets on top of the standard 12-ticket limit for other events. That's 24 total tickets if you're all-in on soccer.
Over 5 million fans have already registered for tickets. Registration for the first ticket drop closes Wednesday at 11:59 p.m. PDT. Southern California and Oklahoma locals get first crack starting April 2, with general sales beginning April 9.
