Breel Embolo Stranded as Visa Review Threatens World Cup Start

Breel Embolo missed Switzerland's flight to the United States on Tuesday after his Electronic System for Travel Authorization was placed under unexpected review — and it all traces back to a court case from a Basel altercation in 2018.

The Swiss Football Association confirmed the Stade Rennais forward could not board with the squad, stating: "We are currently in contact with the relevant authorities and expect that Breel will either join the team later today or travel tomorrow." Cautiously optimistic, but not exactly reassuring with Switzerland's World Cup opener against Canada in Toronto set for June 12.

The conviction that's come back to bite him

Embolo was convicted in 2023 of making repeated threats and handed a suspended fine. An appeals court upheld the ruling. He chose not to take it to the Federal Court, closing the case nine months ago. Until now, that verdict had seemingly not affected his ability to enter the US — he'd been cleared for previous international fixtures without issue.

Then, at 10:30am on Tuesday, his ESTA flipped to "additional review." No warning. No time to fix it quietly.

It's a genuine problem for Switzerland's preparation. Embolo isn't a peripheral squad member — he's a senior striker with 52 caps and goals in major tournaments. Any disruption to his pre-tournament training block with the group in the US matters, especially given Switzerland's Group B schedule has them opening against Canada before facing Bosnia-Herzegovina and hosts Qatar.

Switzerland aren't alone in this mess

The visa chaos stretching across this World Cup cycle has been remarkable in scale. South Africa's entire squad had to delay their US departure over the weekend due to unresolved entry issues — prompting the country's Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie to publicly call it an "embarrassing" administrative failure on X and demand a formal report from SAFA.

Players from Algeria, Senegal, Ivory Coast, Tunisia, Cape Verde, and Iran are still waiting on clearance. Iran's federation says it expects visas to come through this week.

For anyone pricing up early-tournament Switzerland markets, Embolo's availability — and his sharpness if he arrives days behind his teammates — is a real variable worth factoring in before their opener.

  • Embolo's conviction: Repeated threats, 2023 verdict, suspended fine — appeals court upheld the ruling
  • Switzerland Group B: Canada, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Qatar
  • Opening match: Switzerland vs Canada, Toronto, June 12
  • Other affected nations: South Africa, Algeria, Senegal, Ivory Coast, Tunisia, Cape Verde, Iran

The federation confirmed his ESTA was valid until Tuesday morning. Then it wasn't. Whether he joins the squad hours late or a full day behind, Switzerland's World Cup build-up just got complicated through no fault of their own planning.
