Manchester United are keeping tabs on FC Porto winger William Gomes, a 20-year-old Brazilian who has been turning heads in Portuguese football. The interest is real. So is the obstacle: Porto have reportedly inserted an €80 million release clause in his contract.
That's a significant outlay for a player who, however promising, hasn't yet proven himself outside the Primeira Liga. United's recruitment team will know the difference between a talent worth developing and a gamble dressed up as ambition.
What Gomes actually offers
The profile is appealing on paper. A wide attacker with pace, directness, and the ability to beat defenders one-on-one — exactly the kind of unpredictability United's forward line has lacked in stretches this season. At 20, he has the ceiling that makes recruitment departments salivate.
But ceiling and floor are two different things. Adapting to the physicality and relentless tempo of Premier League football takes time, and United can't afford to be a development club right now. They have gaps across the squad, and sinking the lion's share of a transfer budget into one unproven young attacker would limit their ability to patch those other holes.
It's worth asking what €80m buys elsewhere — proven output at the highest level, not potential. That framing matters when you're weighing up squad-building priorities.
Porto won't blink first
Porto have form for this. They know how to hold their nerve in negotiations and extract top value for academy graduates and developed talents. They're not moving Gomes for a discount.
United are reportedly one of several Premier League clubs monitoring him, which means any concrete move would likely spark a bidding situation — pushing the price higher still, or forcing a swift decision before a rival acts.
If Gomes keeps performing through the second half of the season, that release clause isn't going away. Porto set it deliberately. United will have to decide whether they're willing to meet it.
