At 16 years old, Mathis Albert just rewrote a piece of American soccer history — and he did it wearing the Borussia Dortmund shirt in the Bundesliga.

The South Carolina native made his first Bundesliga appearance this Sunday, becoming the youngest American ever to debut in Germany's top flight. The record he broke? It belonged to Giovanni Reyna, who debuted for the same club in 2020 at 17. Albert is a full year younger.

A Dortmund academy product with German roots

Albert was born in Greenville, South Carolina, on 21 May 2009. He joined Dortmund's academy in 2024 at 14, turning down interest from Dutch clubs to move to Germany — a decision shaped partly by heritage. He holds German nationality, and his grandparents are from the country. That dual connection gave Germany an edge that pure football reasons alone might not have.

This isn't his first appearance in Dortmund's first team, though. Albert already made his senior debut during the 2025 Club World Cup. Sunday was different — this was the Bundesliga, where the pace, the press, and the stakes are a different proposition entirely.

He handled it at 16.

What it means beyond the milestone

The Bundesliga has quietly become a pipeline for American talent, with clubs hoovering up young prospects from US academies for years. Albert fits that pattern, but the record age sets him apart. Reyna himself was considered an exceptional case when he broke through — Albert has gone younger, and in the same shirt.

Whether he develops into a regular starter or follows the slower burn of most academy products, Dortmund's talent pipeline for American players just got another data point in its favour. Any odds tied to Dortmund's depth and squad flexibility look a little more interesting when a 16-year-old is already logging Bundesliga minutes.

The youngest American in Bundesliga history. The record is his.
