MLS Clubs Set to Cash In With New Jersey Sponsorship Space in 2026.

Major League Soccer is about to unlock a whole new revenue stream for its clubs. And the timing couldn't be better with the 2026 World Cup coming to North America.

Starting right after the 2026 MLS All-Star break in late July, teams can sell advertising space on the lower back of player jerseys for the first time ever. It's a pretty big deal that could seriously boost club finances across the league.

MLS chief revenue officer Carter Ladd explained why they're making this move now. "We feel like this is the right moment in time to unlock a new asset for our clubs to capture the attention coming out of the World Cup," he said. Smart thinking when you consider how many eyes will be on soccer in North America.

The new sponsor logos can be up to nine inches wide and four inches tall. That's about 80 percent the size of the main front jersey patch, which is still the most valuable spot. It's way bigger than those tiny sleeve patches teams currently use, which are only about 2.5 inches square.

Following Global Football's Lead

This move brings MLS more in line with how European leagues do things. Back-of-shirt sponsors are totally normal over there and can be quite valuable. Industry insiders say some MLS teams could make over $1 million per year just from this new space alone.

The amount will depend on market size and how much demand there is from sponsors. Bigger market teams in places like Los Angeles, New York, or Miami will likely command premium prices. That's something to keep in mind when evaluating which clubs might have extra cash to spend on players in future transfer windows.

MLS has been gradually expanding its sponsorship options. Before 2020, teams could only put sponsors on the front of jerseys. Then came sleeve patches on both arms, including the Apple TV logo. Now with the back of the shirt opening up, MLS actually has more jersey advertising zones than other major North American leagues like the NBA or MLB.

What This Means for Fans and Betting

It's not clear yet if fan replica jerseys will feature these back logos this season or if clubs will wait until 2027. Either way, the extra revenue could help teams invest more in player talent, which makes the league more competitive overall.

For bettors, this financial boost across the league is worth watching. Teams with better sponsorship deals might have more resources to strengthen their squads mid-season. That could shift the balance of power and affect playoff odds as the season progresses.

The new jersey designs for 2026 are already rolling out from adidas, with teams like FC Dallas, CF Montréal, and Chicago Fire showing off fresh looks. Soon those kits will have even more real estate for sponsors to fill.
