The governing body is marketing each piece as "an authentic 2026 FIFA World Cup Piece of the pitch, permanently preserved in a premium acrylic with a USB keepsake." The USB, apparently, features an "authenticity film." The box has "striking spot UV detailing." If you're wondering what the actual dimensions of the turf segment are, FIFA's store lists 17.5 by 17.5 by 17.5 — without specifying whether that's inches, centimetres, or millimetres. FIFA didn't respond when asked to clarify.
The field drawing the most complaints at the tournament
Here's the awkward part: the MetLife Stadium pitch has been one of the more controversial surfaces at this World Cup. Players and coaches have publicly criticised the quality of the turf, which makes sense given the stadium normally runs an artificial surface for New York Giants and Jets NFL games. The natural grass was laid specifically for the tournament — and it hasn't impressed everyone who's had to play on it.
Selling premium collectibles cut from a pitch that's been called substandard is a particular kind of confidence.
Still, FIFA has never struggled to find buyers at prices that make others wince. Final tickets are listed at up to $32,970 each. Hospitality packages — food and drinks included — are priced at $34,500 and $32,500. Against those numbers, $450 for a rectangle of grass almost seems reasonable.
