Like Father, Like Son: Kai Rooney Steps Out for Man United U21s.

The Rooney name is back at Manchester United. Kai Rooney, 16-year-old son of the club's all-time top scorer Wayne, came off the bench in the 78th minute of United's U21 3-2 defeat to Nottingham Forest on Friday — making his debut at the level just three days after playing 24 minutes for the under-19s against Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Youth League.

That's a punishing week for a teenager. Two high-level youth appearances in under 72 hours, and neither ended in a win. United's U21s, managed by Adam Lawrence, fell to a narrow defeat despite goals from captain Dan Armer and Samuel Lusale — the same Lusale that Kai replaced late on.

A winding road back to Old Trafford

Kai's journey to this point is anything but straightforward. He first joined United's academy as a ten-year-old in November 2016, then defected to Manchester City two months later. After two years at City, he followed his dad to the United States when Wayne signed for D.C. United, playing for Bethesda Soccer Club in Maryland. It was only when Wayne returned to English football with Derby in 2020 that Kai re-enrolled at United's academy — and he's been there since.

His first taste of Old Trafford came in January, when he came off the bench in an FA Youth Cup win over Derby. Friday was his U21 debut. The trajectory is moving quickly.

Wayne made 559 appearances for United between 2004 and 2017, scoring 253 goals — both club records. That's a shadow that will follow Kai for the rest of his career, fairly or not. Right now, he's a 16-year-old winger getting his first minutes at U21 level. Everything else is just context.

  • Kai Rooney replaced Samuel Lusale in the 78th minute vs Nottingham Forest
  • United U21s lost 3-2; goals from Dan Armer and Lusale were not enough
  • Rooney had played 24 minutes for the U19s vs Atletico Madrid on Tuesday
  • His first Old Trafford appearance came in January's FA Youth Cup win over Derby
  • He initially joined United's academy in 2016 before a stint at Man City and time in the US

United's youth setup will be watching closely. Whether Kai has the ability to step out from his father's considerable legacy is a question that won't be answered for years — but Friday was at least a starting point.
