Santiago Castrillon, Millonarios Teenager, Dies After Collapsing on Pitch.

Santiago Castrillon, an 18-year-old attacking midfielder in Millonarios' youth setup, has died after collapsing during a match. Colombian football is in mourning.

Castrillon was attended to immediately by the team's medical staff before being transferred by ambulance to a high-complexity hospital in northern Bogotá, where cardiovascular specialists treated him in intensive care. It wasn't enough.

A player on the verge of the first team

This wasn't a player lost in the margins of a youth academy. Castrillon had been training regularly with the Millonarios first team and received his first official call-up for a BetPlay match against Atletico Bucaramanga last October. He would have turned 19 in September. His career was beginning, not ending.

Born in Bucaramanga, he joined Millonarios in 2021 after coming through Guayos FC. His former teacher there, Luis Eduardo Pedraza, described him before the tragedy as "a very hardworking, very humble, very disciplined boy, very passionate about soccer, with a clear vision of what he wanted."

Millonarios' own tribute cut through the usual institutional language: "Santiago didn't just play football. He lived it, felt it, shared it with a smile that today remains etched in all of us."

Rivals Independiente Santa Fe — whose players prayed for Castrillon at the end of Saturday's fixture after news broke — also released a statement: "Today football is in mourning, and we come together to support his entire family and loved ones during this difficult time."

There are no competitive angles to weigh here, no implications for the title race. A teenager who loved football and was good enough to train with professionals is gone. That's the whole story.
