Thierry Henry just gave us the most useful fashion show in football — lacing up a pair of On's prototype soccer boots during Robert Pires' testimonial match at Stade Saint-Symphorien in Metz. Not a studio shoot. Not a sponsored Instagram post. Actual boots, on an actual pitch.

It's the clearest signal yet that On's football ambitions are real, and moving faster than some expected when Kylian Mbappé's Nike exit was first confirmed.

What Henry's wearing — and what it means

The boots use On's LightSpray technology: an automated robotic spraying process that creates a seamless, ultra-thin one-piece upper. The claim is that the finished product will be the lightest football boot ever made. Whether that holds up against whatever Nike and Adidas bring out in response is another question — but the manufacturing process alone is genuinely different from anything on the market.

Henry isn't just the face here. As On's Director of Football, he's embedded in the product development, player partnerships, and broader football strategy. He's been working directly alongside Mbappé on the boot design, which explains why the prototype appearing on his feet first makes sense — he'd know better than anyone where the design currently stands.

Speaking to AS, Henry confirmed the final version is still a 2026 release at the earliest. Mbappé is training in prototypes, not match-day boots. There's still runway to go.

Mbappé's stake in the outcome

The commercial structure of this deal makes it different from a standard sponsorship. Mbappé, who had been a Nike athlete since his professional debut at 16 in 2015 — one of the biggest relationships in the brand's football portfolio — now holds equity in On. He's not just wearing the product. He has a financial interest in whether it sells.

That changes the dynamic entirely. When his boots eventually launch, likely in 2027, this won't be a signature line dropped on an existing silhouette. It'll be a co-built product from the ground up, backed by someone who has skin in the game beyond the endorsement fee.

On's football odds just got a lot more interesting. The Metz appearance was low-key by design — but nothing about what's coming next will be.
