Matt Beard's wife tells coroner Burnley 'bullied him' before his death at 47.

"I feel they bullied him, to be honest." That's what Debbie Beard told a coroner's pre-inquest hearing on Thursday, alleging that Burnley Football Club's treatment of her husband contributed directly to the decline in his mental health before his death in September 2025.

Matt Beard — one of the most decorated managers in English women's football — died on September 20, 2025, aged 47, at the Countess of Chester Hospital after suffering a hypoxic brain injury. He had left Burnley Women just two months after being appointed, in August 2025. His family believe that departure was a "catalyst" in what followed.

What the hearing heard

At Ruthin Coroner's Office in Denbighshire, Wales, Debbie described a man who masked his struggles. "He was the type of person who would say, 'yes, I'm fine', and he wouldn't admit it. You could see it in his manner at home." She was clear that his exit from Burnley wasn't a move to something better. "He left Burnley because he was not happy there. They didn't allow him to move on."

Senior coroner John Gittins concluded that "further work needs doing" before a full inquest can proceed. Statements have been gathered from Burnley and Leicester City Women — who were reportedly linked with hiring Beard after he left Burnley — along with GP records. His agent Curtis Dawes and the League Managers Association, which Beard had consulted, will also be contacted for evidence. Burnley will be invited to participate as an interested party.

The family also want a video recorded by Beard prior to his death to be heard at the inquest.

A career that shaped women's football in England

To understand the weight of this loss, you need to know what Beard built over 17 years. He won back-to-back WSL titles with Liverpool in 2013 and 2014, returned to the club in 2021 to win the Women's Championship and earn promotion, then guided them to fourth in the top flight in 2023-24 — earning his second WSL Manager of the Season award in the process. He also managed Chelsea, West Ham, Bristol City (interim), and US side Boston Breakers.

Last month, Beard was inducted into the WSL Hall of Fame. The full inquest into his death has been delayed pending further evidence.
